Evaluating Courses
by James Brooks
This is the second part of an online self-study programme that aims to give you the skills to confidently change a course you are teaching or designing in a way that is likely to improve student motivation and achievement. The home page has a list of the other sections.
Although I try to keep terminology to a minimum here, some familiarity of the first section would help you get more out of this material.
Table of Contents
By being able to answer the questions below you should be able to work out which part of your course would most benefit from improvements. It also acts as an overview to the material to follow which goes into more detail on each. This section is split into 8 parts followed by some further reading.
- Part 1 – What should you evaluate first?
- Part 2 – How do you evaluate learning outcomes?
- Part 3 – How do you evaluate the structure of a course?
- Part 4 – How do you evaluate learning activities?
- Part 5 – How do you evaluate the provision of feedback?
- Part 6 – How do you evaluate the quality of an explanation?
- Part 7 – How do you evaluate an assessment?

Part 2 – How do you evaluate learning outcomes?
